Why Fall Might Be the Best Time to Visit Amelia Island
Everyone thinks of Amelia Island as a summer destination.
But if you ask me? Fall might actually be one of the best times to be here.
The weather begins to cool down, beach days aren't over, outdoor dining gets even better, and there's something about fall that makes island life feel especially good.
If you're planning an Amelia Island vacation in the fall, here's why I think you'll love it.
You Can Still Have a Beach Day
One of the best things about fall in Northeast Florida is that beach season doesn't suddenly end when summer does.
There are still plenty of beautiful days for walking the beach, sitting by the water, reading a book in the sand, or simply taking your coffee down to the ocean in the morning.
And honestly, a long beach walk when the temperatures start to cool down is pretty hard to beat.
Downtown Fernandina Beach Feels Even Better
Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach is one of those places made for wandering.
Grab coffee, walk Centre Street, visit the local shops, stop for lunch, and don't be surprised if an afternoon turns into dinner and drinks.
Once fall arrives, sitting outside becomes even more enjoyable.
It's Perfect Outdoor Weather
Fall is when I find myself wanting to be outside even more.
Bike rides. Golf. Walking the Egans Creek Greenway. Boating. Farmers markets. Exploring Fort Clinch. Dinner outside.
You can actually enjoy being outdoors without feeling like you need to jump directly into the nearest pool afterward.
Golf Season Is Pretty Great, Too
If golf is part of your ideal Amelia Island getaway, fall is a beautiful time to play.
Between the island's golf courses and resort communities, you could easily plan an entire Amelia Island golf weekend around a few rounds, great dinners, and a little beach time.
Come Hungry
Fall weather and outdoor dining are a very good combination.
This is the time of year when sitting by the water at Salty Pelican or spending an evening hopping around Downtown Fernandina Beach sounds especially appealing.
And if you've read my other posts, you already know I have plenty of opinions about where you should eat while you're here!
You Get to Experience the Island Differently
This may be my favorite reason to visit Amelia Island outside of peak summer.
You get a better feel for everyday life on Amelia Island.
Go to the grocery store. Grab coffee where the locals do. Walk through downtown on an ordinary morning. Explore some of the residential areas. Take a drive with nowhere particular to go.
If you've ever wondered what it might be like to actually live here, don't only visit during your typical summer vacation.
Come experience Amelia Island in the fall.
You may find you love this version of the island even more.
Planning a Fall Trip to Amelia Island?
Bring your beach clothes.
Bring a light layer for cooler evenings.
Come hungry.
And leave a little room in your schedule to do absolutely nothing.
That's one of the things Amelia Island does best.
And if you happen to find yourself driving around looking at houses while you're here?
Well...I know someone who can help with that.
